Demonstrating the outcomes of youth services has always been a tough ask. But like with other areas of public and charitable spending, organisations are under more and more pressure to show that difference they make.
A forthcoming report commissioned by the Catalyst Consortium, a group of youth organisations led by NCVYS, aims to offer guidance to organisations and establish an agreed framework for impact measurement across the youth sector. As the authors of the report say, the youth sector has always had powerful examples of its impact on individual young people, but struggled to provide quantitative evidence.
The report, by researchers at the Young Foundation, proposes a model of ‘clusters of capabilities’, including ‘confidence and agency, resilience, and managing feelings, and reviews the link between these capabilities and long-term outcomes.
The work includes a matrix of tools – including NPC’s Well-being Measure – to help organisations approach the issue. The matrix includes a range of outcomes measures, clinical diagnostic tools, case working aids, and data management software, setting out the options available to organisations.
The report has been made available in a draft form and the authors are inviting feedback by 31 March. The final version is promised in April, when we will review it here in more detail.
